WASHINGTON (Talk Media News) — Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) on Friday criticized Hillary Clinton for comments she made saying that some supporters of Donald Trump were part of a “basket of deplorables.”
“I think it was a wrong thing to say. I think that it ignores the very true concerns that we have about needing change in this country,” Heitkamp said when asked about the remarks on WZFG AM 1100 according to audio published by BuzzFeed News. “I think that it was ill-advised.”
During a fundraiser in New York last week, Clinton said that half of Trump supporters were “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic — you name it” and that they could be put into a “basket of deplorables.”
Clinton quickly apologized for her remarks, but didn’t back off her criticism of Trump for what she said was his endorsement of “hateful views” that he shares and spreads throughout his campaign.
“I won’t stop calling out bigotry and racist rhetoric in this campaign. I also meant what I said last night about empathy, and the very real challenges we face as a country where so many people have been left out and left behind,” Clinton said.
Heitkamp is a Democrat who narrowly won her race in 2012. She is up for reelection in 2018.
