WASHINGTON – Former Massachusetts governor and 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney announced Friday that he will run for the Senate seat incumbent Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) intends to vacate next January.
“I have decided to run for United States Senate because I believe I can help bring Utah’s values and Utah’s lessons to Washington,” Romney said in a video posted on his Facebook page.
Romney, 70, is expected to make a more formal announcement in the evening at the Utah County Republican Party’s Lincoln Day Dinner.
Romney is a frequent critic of President Donald Trump. During the 2016 campaign Romney castigated Trump as “a phony, a fraud.”
Trump, in a trip to Utah late last year, implored Hatch, who is 83, not to retire.
