WASHINGTON— President Donald Trump confirmed Monday that the administration is weighing a controversial proposal that would exclude some transgender Americans from Title IX protections.
“We’re looking at it. We have a lot of different concepts right now. They have a lot of different things happening with respect to transgender right now,” Trump told reporters while leaving the White House on his way to Texas. “We’re looking at it very seriously.”
The New York Times reported Sunday that the Department of Health and Human Services has drafted a memo arguing for sex to be legally defined as the “immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth.”
If adopted, the new definition would make it harder for transgender people to seek protection under Title IX, a civil rights law that prohibits gender-based discrimination in educational activities that receive federal funds.
The report sparked widespread backlash from LGBT advocates.
When pressed Monday on how the proposal gelled with promises he made on the campaign trail to protect LGBT Americans, Trump replied that he is “protecting everybody.”
“I want to protect our country.”
