WASHINGTON – GOP Rep. Martha McSally has a comfortable lead over Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema in the Arizona Senate race, according to a poll released Thursday.

The Arizona ABC 15/OH Predictive Insights poll found that 52 percent of the respondents said they support McSally, compared with 45 percent who said they support Sinema. Meanwhile, 1 percent said they support Green Party candidate Angela Green and 2 percent said they are not sure whom they support.

The sampling included 600 likely voters and was carried out Oct. 22-23. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The survey follows recent polls that showed Sinema with a comfortable lead over McSally.

Sinema, 42, is an attorney and has served in Congress since 2013. If elected, she would become the first openly bisexual member of the Senate.

McSally, 52, is a retired Air Force colonel. She has served in Congress since 2015.

The candidates are vying for the seat of retiring GOP Sen. Jeff Flake.

Arizona was once considered a Republican stronghold but the state has become more of a battleground in recent decades.

President Donald Trump carried Arizona by fewer than 4 points in 2016.

President Bill Clinton carried the state by fewer than 3 points in 1996. Clinton was the first Democrat in a presidential election to win Arizona since Harry Truman in 1948.

The state’s congressional delegation consists of five Republicans and four Democrats.

Both of Arizona’s U.S. senators are Republicans.

Arizona has never elected a woman to the Senate but that will change this year as all three candidates on the ballot are female.
