WASHINGTON – Former Vice President Joe Biden has a razor-thin lead over former Rep. Beto O’Rourke among Texas Democratic primary voters, according to a poll released Monday.
Emerson Polling found that 23% of the respondents said they support Biden and 22% said they support O’Rourke, who represented an El Paso-area district in Congress from Jan. 3, 2013-Jan. 3, 2019.
Meanwhile, 17% said they support Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
Eight percent said they support South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
Seven percent said they support Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.).
Four percent said they support former HUD secretary and former San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro.
Three percent said they support entrepreneur and philanthropist Andrew Yang. The same percentage said they support Sens. Kamala Harris (Calif.) and Amy Klobuchar (Minn.).
The other candidates polled at 1 percent or below.
The survey included 342 Democratic primary voters and was carried out Thursday through Sunday. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.3%.
National polls show Biden leading the 20-candidate field.
An accompanying Emerson poll projected that Biden would defeat President Donald Trump in the Lone Star State by a single percentage point. The poll showed Trump and O’Rourke tied.
That survey included 799 registered voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4%.
No Democrat has won Texas in a presidential election since Jimmy Carter in 1976.
