WASHINGTON – Former Vice President Joe Biden has a near double-digit lead over former Rep. Beto O’Rourke among Texas Democrats, according to a poll released Monday.
The University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll found that 23% of the respondents said they support Biden and 15% said they support O’Rourke, who represented an El Paso-area district in Congress from Jan. 3, 2013-Jan. 3, 2019.
Meanwhile, 14% said they support Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.).
Twelve percent said they support Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
Eight percent said they support South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
Five percent said they support Sen. Kamala Harris (Calif.)
Three percent said they support former HUD Secretary and former San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro. The same percentage said they support Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii).
The survey included 1,200 registered Democrats and was carried out May 31-June 9. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.46 percentage points.
National polls show Biden with an overwhelming lead over the other 22 Democratic presidential candidates.
An accompanying UT/TT poll found that 50% of Texas voters support President Donald Trump’s re-election.
That survey included 1,200 registered voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.83 percentage points.
No Democrat has carried ruby-red Texas since Jimmy Carter in 1976.
