WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday morning that the four freshmen progressive Democratic congresswomen he is engaged in a feud with have gotten a “free pass” for their past controversial statements.

This afternoon the House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on a resolution to condemn Trump’s twitter attacks on the congresswomen.

Trump tweeted Sunday that the lawmakers, all of whom are outspoken opponents of the administration, should return to their countries of origin. He has since double-downed on that claim.

The lawmakers are Reps. Ilhan Omar (Minn.), Rashida Tlaib (Mich.), Ayanna Pressley (Mass.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.).

Omar, who is black, was born in Somalia. Tlaib is of Palestinian descent and was born in Detroit. Pressley is African-American; she was born in Cincinnati and reared in Chicago. Ocasio-Cortez is of Puerto Rican descent and was born in the Bronx. Tlaib and Omar are the first Muslim women ever elected to Congress.

The lawmakers responded to Trump in tweets and in a news conference on Monday evening.

Trump’s remarks have provoked accusations of racism from both the mainstream media and Democrats. Several Republicans condemned the remarks but most stopped short of labeling them racist.

Trump has refuted accusations of racism.

Omar and Tlaib have been accused of making both anti-Israel and anti-Semitic comments. They have denied the allegations.

In March, House Democrats abandoned plans to respond to provocative comments Omar had made about Americans who support Israel with a resolution that would have condemned anti-Semitism. They instead passed a resolution that condemned all forms of hate and contained no reference of Omar.

The resolution the House is considering today is called: “Condemning President Trump’s racist comments directed at Members of Congress.”

Tlaib became a household name in January when, hours after being sworn into office, she said of Trump: “We’re gonna go in there and we’re going to impeach the mother***”

Ocasio-Cortez has referred to detention centers that house undocumented immigrants as “concentration camps.” She has also compared the fight against climate change to the fight against Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan during World War II.

Pressley is an outspoken opponent of Trump and his policies but does not have a reputation of being a bomb-thrower.
