WASHINGTON – Monopoly fans have voted to boot the boot, wheelbarrow and thumble tokens from the famous board game, and add a Tyrannosaurus rex, a penguin and a rubber ducky.
Hasbro Inc. announced the winners Friday morning, two days before World Monopoly Day.
“The next generation of tokens clearly represents the interests of our fans around the world and we’re proud to have our iconic game impacted by the people that feel most passionate about playing it,” Jonathan Berkowitz, Hasbro’s senior vice president of marketing said in a statement.
Fans selected the winning tokens online from 64 options. The other contenders were a winking emoji, a hashtag, an ’80s-style cellphone and a pair of bunny slippers.
The Scottie dog, top hat, race car, battleship and cat will continue to have a place on the board. The Scottie received the most votes by fans.
Since the real-estate game’s creation in 1933, Monopoly has had 20 different tokens. The thimble, boot, top hat and race car were among the originals. In 2013 millions of voters chose to ditch the iron and replace it with the cat.
Monopoly games with the new tokens will be available in the fall.
