WASHINGTON—White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters Tuesday that President Donald Trump is “extremely confident” that the Department of Justice will be able to provide evidence supporting his claim that former President Barack Obama administration wire tapped Trump Tower during the presidential election.
“He feels very confident that what will ultimately come of this will vindicate him,” Spicer said during Tuesday’s briefing.
Spicer’s statement comes after the House Intelligence Committee, which the White Hosue asked to investigate Trump’s claim, requested evidence of Trump’s claim from the Justice Department by Monday.
At the Justice Department’s request, the committee gave the department an additional week to compile information.
Spicer said that he was personally “very confident” that relevant information would be provided.
The White House has not confirmed what Trump based his initial accusation on, but has pointed to unnamed media reports that suggest members of Trump’s teams may have been investigated for potential ties with the Russian government.
