WASHINGTON— President Donald Trump said Thursday that North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un could meet the same fate as deposed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi if they fail to reach a deal on denuclearization.

“If you look at that model with Gaddafi, that was a total decimation, we went in there to beat him. Now, that model would take place if we don’t make a deal, most likely,” Trump said in the Oval Office following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. “If we make a deal, I think Kim Jong Un is going to be very, very happy.”

The U.S. was part of an international military effort against Libya in 2011, one that ultimately lead to Gaddafi’s ouster and death.

Trump said that the U.S. is continuing to negotiate details of an upcoming meeting between him and Kim with North Korea, despite reports emerging from the nation’s state-run media suggesting that talks could be scuttled if the U.S. continues to push for denuclearization.

“North Korea is actually talking to us about times and everything else as though nothing happened,” Trump said.

The meeting is scheduled to take place in Singapore on June 12.
