WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump lashed out at the media on Twitter Wednesday for reporting on first lady Melania Trump’s extended absence from the public eye.

On May 14, Melania Trump underwent surgery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for what her office described as a “benign kidney condition.”

On May 19, the White House announced that she had returned home. More than three weeks had passed without a public appearance  sans at least one instance of reporters spotting her on White House grounds.

The first lady broke the streak on Monday, appearing at a Gold Star Families Memorial Day Reception.

During the interim, there was speculation on social media as to her whereabouts  — some that was tongue-in-cheek and some that took on a more worrisome tone.

Last week, Melania Trump posted a curiously worded tweet denying that there was anything wrong.
