WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump spent much of Christmas Eve fuming on social media, taking swipes at lawmakers from both sides of the aisle, his outgoing defense secretary, the former U.S. envoy in the fight against ISIS, the Federal Reserve and the media.

The online tirade came one day after the president unceremoniously tweeted that Defense Secretary James Mattis will be removed from the Pentagon on Jan. 1, two months before he intended to resign.

The president was initially scheduled to spend the holiday season and the first week of the New Year in Palm Beach, Fla.

The trip was canceled after Trump announced that he would refuse to sign legislation funding approximately 25 percent of the government until Congress secured $5 billion for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, a proposal that Democrats have long balked at.

As a result, the government entered a partial shutdown Friday night at midnight.

Aside from his string of tweets, the president’s Christmas Eve schedule included an afternoon meeting on border security with Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

He also tweeted a photo from an Oval Office briefing on North Korea.

In the evening, he is expected to join the first lady in making calls to children as part of the North American Aerospace Defense Command’s (NORAD) annual Santa Tracker program.
